The experience
The drive itself becomes the itinerary. You leave your Phnom Penh hotel in a private vehicle and head north toward Siem Reap, but the journey breaks into four distinct stops rather than a straight run. Skun Spider Village comes first: a local market where vendors sell insects and you can photograph the scene before a two-hour push to the next site. Sambor Prei Kuk follows: a sprawling archaeological site built in the sixth and seventh centuries during the Chenla Kingdom, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 30 kilometers north of Kampong Thom town. The ruins sit 176 kilometers east of Angkor, so this is a genuine detour into Pre-Angkorian history, not a roadside marker.
Kampong Dkei's ancient bridge comes next: Spean Praptos, a twelfth-century corbeled stone arch that once held the title of longest in the world, spanning 285 feet with more than twenty narrow arches. It was built under King Jayavarman VII and sits on the old route between Angkor and the lower Mekong wetlands. The final stop is Tonle Sap Lake at Kampong Kleang, where you hire a boat and move through the largest fishing community on the lake. The stilt houses rise ten to thirteen meters above the water, and the floating villages sit on open water where fewer tourists venture. This is the moment the drive becomes a landscape: you are on the water, moving through the community, not passing it from the road.
Your driver speaks English and manages all logistics: fuel, tolls, parking and insurance are included. Water is provided throughout the day. If you travel with small children, infant seats are available for an extra charge. The route works in both directions: Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or the reverse, so you can build it into either end of your trip. The boat ride at Kampong Kleang and entry to Sambor Prei Kuk temples are separate fees you arrange on arrival.

Top questions
What is Sambor Prei Kuk and why is it worth the detour?
Sambor Prei Kuk is a sixth- and seventh-century archaeological site built during the Chenla Kingdom, located 30 kilometers north of Kampong Thom. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits 176 kilometers east of Angkor, making it a genuine Pre-Angkorian ruin rather than a roadside stop: substantial enough to justify the drive north from Phnom Penh.
Can I see the Tonle Sap Lake fishing community from the road, or do I need the boat ride?
The fishing community at Kampong Kleang sits on the water itself, so you need to hire a boat to move through it and see the stilt houses and floating villages. The boat ride is a separate fee arranged when you arrive, and it is the only way to actually be in the community rather than viewing it from shore.
How long do we spend at each stop, or is that flexible?
The itinerary is structured around four stops with a two-hour drive between Skun Spider Village and Sambor Prei Kuk, but the time you spend at each site depends on your interest. Your driver manages the overall route and timing to fit the eight- to twelve-hour window from hotel to hotel.
What was Kampong Dkei bridge built for, and is it still standing?
Kampong Dkei bridge, also called Spean Praptos, was built in the twelfth century under King Jayavarman VII as part of the route between Angkor and the lower Mekong wetlands. It is a corbeled stone arch spanning 285 feet with more than twenty narrow arches and once held the title of longest bridge in the world. It remains standing on the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
