The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel so far from Phnom Penh so quickly. One minute we were dodging city traffic on the back of a Vespa (helmet slightly askew, but nobody seemed to mind), and the next we’d pulled up at this golden temple—Mongkol Serey. Our guide, Dara, explained the basics of Cambodian Buddhism while incense drifted around us. I tried copying a bow I saw an old woman do, but my knees cracked and she just smiled at me.

The ferry across to Silk Island was slow in that good way—kids waved from the shore and you could smell river water mixed with something sweet from a food stall nearby. Once we rolled off onto the island, it felt like someone had turned down the volume on life. Mango trees everywhere, chickens darting across red dirt lanes. We stopped at a tofu skin stall; I’d never seen tofu made like that before—thin sheets drying in the sun. The woman running it handed me a piece to try; it was warm and tasted faintly nutty. Dara laughed when I tried to say thank you in Khmer (I definitely butchered it).

Visiting the silk weaving house was quieter than I thought it would be—just the soft clack of wooden looms and women’s voices low in conversation. The patterns they wove looked impossibly detailed up close. One of them let me run my hand over the finished cloth; it felt cool and almost slippery. She told us her mother taught her everything she knew. There was something about that moment—sunlight slanting through bamboo walls—that stuck with me.
