The Experience

“Don’t worry, we Cambodians never let anyone go hungry,” our guide Dara grinned as he handed me a skewer at Kandal Market. It was just after sunset — the air sticky and buzzing with scooters, smells of grilling meat and lemongrass everywhere. I’d never been on a Vespa in Phnom Penh before, but somehow it felt right, weaving through alleys where locals laughed over plastic tables. Dara kept pointing out things I would’ve missed: a woman fanning charcoal, kids chasing each other between stalls, that one soup stall he swore was “the best on this street — maybe in the city.” I tried to say thank you in Khmer; Dara chuckled and corrected me gently. I still think about that moment — how language can trip you up but also break the ice.

The Russian Market was louder than I expected, all neon lights and chatter echoing off the tin roofs. We stopped for something crispy (I never did catch the name) and cold local beer — which tasted better than any beer should after a humid ride. There’s this mix of sweet smoke and fried garlic in the air that clings to your shirt, not unpleasantly. At one point my driver slowed so I could watch an old man stir a bubbling pot; he winked at me when he caught my stare. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so welcome as an outsider.

We hit eight different stops — some tiny carts wedged between shops, others proper little restaurants where families waved us in like regulars. The last place was this backstreet bar at Basace Land; fairy lights strung up overhead, everyone sort of sinking into their chairs with fresh beers and full bellies. Dara raised his glass to us (“to new friends who eat everything!”), and yeah — it felt genuine. The ride back was quieter, city lights flickering past as we zipped through side streets. Hard to say if it was the food or just Phnom Penh itself that stuck with me most.
