The experience

We’d barely made it out of the tuk-tuk before the noise hit us. This low, rolling cheer from somewhere inside the TV Stadium in Phnom Penh. Mr. Sop was already waiting by the entrance, grinning like he knew what was about to happen. He handed us our tickets, then security guards walked us to our ringside seats in the thick of it, and once we sat down he passed us our four cold beers. I didn’t expect to sit so close to the ring. I mean, you could see sweat flying off when someone landed a knee.

The fights started fast. Five matches in one night doesn’t sound like much until you’re there, watching elbows crack against forearms and hearing that slap echo through the crowd. Mr. Sop explained bits of Kun Khmer history between rounds: how it goes back to the 9th century, how Angkor warriors used these same moves centuries ago. He pointed out why Cambodian fighters love their elbows so much (I tried to say “Pradal Serey” right, he laughed at my accent). The air smelled like fried garlic from someone’s snack bag behind us: should’ve brought my own like he suggested.

There was this one moment when a fighter bowed to his opponent after a brutal round. Just a quick nod but everyone clapped. It felt honest. After the last fight, we got photos with our favorite fighter (I looked ridiculous standing next to him). On the way out, I caught myself still buzzing from all that noise and movement. I still think about that first punch landing. Something about being right there changes how you see it all.
