The experience

The tour begins with pickup from your hotel at 8:00 am and heads to Choeung Ek, the Killing Fields site southwest of the city. The memorial stupa at the center holds the remains of victims from the Khmer Rouge regime. From there, you travel to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in a former high school that became Security Prison 21 during the regime. The museum's barren cells, photographs and documents document the atrocities that took place there.

After lunch, the route moves into central Phnom Penh to the Royal Palace, where you walk through courtyards and gardens to reach the Silver Pagoda, which houses priceless religious artifacts. The palace's Khmer architecture and golden roofs are the visual anchor of the capital's skyline. The final stop is the National Museum, a traditional Khmer-style building holding sculptures, ceramics and other works spanning from the Angkorian period to modern times.

Your guide speaks either English or French throughout the day and manages the route between sites. Bottled water is provided. The full tour runs six to seven hours, and you return to your hotel at the end. Entrance fees to Tuol Sleng, the Killing Fields and the National Museum are not included in the base price, so budget separately for those. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are part of the same visit.

What’s included

  • Private transportation from your hotel.
  • bottled water throughout the day.
  • a guide fluent in English or French.
  • access to all four sites on the itinerary.

Is this one for you?The fixed 8:00 am start and six- to seven-hour duration fit a single day in Phnom Penh if you want to cover both the city's royal landmarks and its modern history without arranging separate transport between sites. If you prefer to focus on either the genocide memorials or the palace and museums alone, look for a half-day option instead.
