The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound—just this soft whirring of our Vespas and a few birds waking up somewhere in the trees. It was 4:30am and still dark when we left Siem Reap, but honestly, I barely noticed how early it was once we rolled up to Angkor Wat. Our guide, Dara, handed out strong coffee and found us a spot by the moat where the air felt almost chilly for Cambodia. The sunrise didn’t come all at once; it crept up behind those towers so slowly that even Dara got quiet. I tried to take photos but none of them really caught what it felt like standing there—just us and a handful of monks in saffron robes moving along the edge of the water.

Walking inside Angkor Wat after that was surreal. The carvings are everywhere—walls covered in stories I could barely wrap my head around. Dara pointed out little details in the stone that I’d have missed (he told us about one battle scene where you can see elephants trampling soldiers if you look close enough). We had breakfast outside near Srah Srang—a simple noodle soup with herbs that smelled bright and green. There was this old woman selling sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves; I bought one just because she smiled at me and said something I didn’t catch.

After breakfast we hopped on our Vespas again and zipped through some backroads toward Angkor Thom. The roads were bumpy but fun—at one point a group of kids waved at us from a mango tree and nearly made me drop my helmet laughing. Bayon temple is wild; all those giant faces staring down at you from every angle. Ta Prohm felt different—quieter somehow, with roots curling over the stones like they’ve been hugging them forever. Our guide let us wander for a bit and I just stood there touching one of those old walls, thinking about how much has happened here. Lunch was near Srah Srang again (I think?)—rice, fish, something spicy that woke me up more than the coffee did.

I didn’t expect to feel so small or so lucky riding through those jungle trails between temples. By the time we got back to our hotel around 2pm, my shirt was dusty and my head was full—in a good way.
