The experience

You're picked up from your hotel at 8:30 AM on day one and driven to the Angkor Archaeological Park ticket booth, where you'll buy your entrance pass (USD 62 per person for 2–3 days, children under 12 enter free). From there, the tour moves through the walled city of Angkor Thom, starting at the South Gate with its giant smiling faces. Bayon Temple comes next (the one famous for over 200 carved stone faces rising from its towers) followed by the Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King, both ceremonial platforms with intricate bas-reliefs. Ta Prohm, the temple from Tomb Raider with massive tree roots draped over its ruins, sits in the afternoon slot before lunch at a nearby restaurant (your guide recommends options). The day closes at Phnom Bakheng, a hilltop temple where you watch the sunset over the surrounding countryside.

Day two starts at 5:00 AM with hotel pickup for sunrise at Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument. Bring breakfast from your hotel to eat after the light show. Once the sun is up, you visit Pre Rup, a mountain-style temple with views across the plains, then head 35 km outside the main park to Banteay Srei, the "Citadel of Women", known for its intricate pink sandstone carvings and some of Angkor's finest artistry. On the return, you stop at smaller, quieter temples: Banteay Samre with its symmetrical 12th-century design, Ta Som with its dramatic tree-covered eastern gate, Neak Pean on its island surrounded by healing pools, and Preah Khan, a sprawling Buddhist complex with atmospheric corridors and mixed Hindu-Buddhist carvings. The tour ends by midday, and you're returned to your hotel.

Transport depends on group size: one or two people travel by tuk-tuk on day one and private car on day two. Three or more travel by air-conditioned van or bus both days.
