The Experience

I still remember the way our driver in Siem Reap grinned when he handed us those icy towels after we’d climbed down from Phnom Bakheng. My shirt was clinging to my back — it’s hotter than you think out there — but the view over Angkor Wat at sunset kind of made me forget everything else for a minute. Our guide, Dara, kept telling stories about the old Khmer kings and how they’d walk these same stones. He pointed out little carvings I’d never have noticed on my own. Sometimes he’d pause mid-sentence to wave at someone passing by — everyone seemed to know him.

The next morning started early (like, really early). We waited in the dark outside Angkor Wat with what felt like half of Cambodia, but somehow it was quiet too — frogs croaking somewhere, the smell of incense drifting from a shrine. When the sky finally went pink behind those towers… I mean, you’ve seen photos but it’s different standing there with your feet in the damp grass. Afterward, Dara took us to a village for breakfast: rice noodles with green curry and these sticky palm cakes that left my fingers sweet all morning. I tried saying thank you in Khmer — got a laugh from an old woman selling dumplings.

Beng Mealea was my favorite part, honestly. It’s about an hour out from Siem Reap (I napped most of the way), but when we got there it felt like stepping into a movie set — trees growing right through broken walls, sunlight coming in sideways through leaves. The air smelled like wet stone and something green I still can’t name. There weren’t many other people around; Dara just let us wander for a bit before calling us back with a “don’t get lost!”

Later that day we floated through Kampong Phluk on Tonle Sap Lake — houses on stilts above brown water, kids waving from boats. A monk in orange robes nodded at us as we passed his monastery. Lunch was simple fish soup at someone’s cousin’s place (I think?), nothing fancy but so fresh it almost tasted sweet. I didn’t expect to feel so welcome everywhere we stopped.
