The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell—damp earth and incense—when we reached Koh Ker. Our guide, Dara, was already grinning at our sleepy faces as we tumbled out of the van. The pyramid temple looked almost unreal, rising out of the jungle like something half-swallowed by time. There were birds everywhere, noisy and bright. Dara told us a story about King Jayavarman IV (I probably mangled his name when I tried it—he laughed). We climbed up the stone steps, hands brushing mossy walls. My legs shook a little at the top but the view was worth it. You can see for miles—just endless green.

Beng Mealea was next and honestly, I lost track of time wandering there. It’s all half-collapsed corridors and tree roots muscling through stone. Dara pointed out carvings I’d have missed—a dancing figure here, a faded lotus there. Lunch was simple: rice, grilled fish, sweet chili sauce. We ate sitting on low stools in some shade while local kids zipped by on bikes. The air felt thick but not heavy—like you could almost taste the leaves.

One morning started before dawn for Angkor Wat’s sunrise. I’ll admit—I was cranky about the 4:40am pickup (who wouldn’t be?). But then that slow gold light crept over the towers and everyone just went quiet for a minute. Even now I still think about that hush—the kind that feels like you’re sharing something ancient with strangers around you. Later we wandered through Bayon’s smiling faces and Ta Prohm’s tangled trees (the “Tomb Raider” one), dodging puddles from last night’s rain.

Kulen Mountain surprised me most—after winding past palm sugar stalls (the syrup smells like burnt caramel), we cooled off under waterfalls so cold they made my teeth ache. At Kampong Phluk floating village, boats drifted between stilt houses painted wild colors; kids waved from doorways above waterline laundry lines flapping in the breeze. Our guide waved back—they all seemed to know him here—and explained how life shifts with the lake seasons. It made me realize how much these places are living, not just old stones or photo ops.
