The experience

You arrive in Siem Reap and have three days to spend. A private guide meets you and your group, and for the next 72 hours the two of you move through the temples and across the water on your own schedule, without waiting for other travelers. The guide speaks the language you book in and carries the knowledge of what you are standing in front of: the history, the layout, the names of the carvings and the reason the trees have grown the way they have.

Day one is the full sweep of Angkor. You spend around two hours at Angkor Wat itself, the largest religious monument on earth, then move to Bayon with its 54 towers and the enormous stone faces carved into them. Ta Prohm comes next: the jungle temple where the roots have split the stones and grown through the galleries. You eat a traditional lunch at Sras Srang, the Royal Baths, a smaller temple site with a reservoir. The day is built to show you the three temples most travelers come to see.

Day two takes you deeper into the complex. Preah Khan, Banteay Srey, Eastern Mebon and other temples fill the day: each one a different scale, a different age, a different arrangement of stone. The guide decides the order and the pace. You see what matters to you without the constraint of a group schedule.

Day three shifts to water. You leave the hotel at 9:00 AM and head to Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake. A boat carries you across to the floating villages where fishermen live and work on the water. You watch how the lake sustains the people who depend on it: the nets, the houses, the children, the daily arrangement of life that has no land beneath it.
