Summary

Angkor’s sunrise faces, tangled roots, and lake life—three days in Cambodia

You’ll walk among Angkor Wat’s ancient stones at sunrise, taste spicy fish amok by royal waters, get lost in jungle temples where roots swallow ruins, and drift past floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake—all with a local guide who brings Cambodia’s stories to life. It’s three days that stay with you long after you leave.

It started with our driver, Dara, grinning at us from behind mirrored sunglasses—he’d already iced the water bottles. We set off early from Siem Reap for Angkor Wat, and I honestly didn’t expect to feel so quiet walking through those first stone gates. Monks in orange robes passed us, sandals scuffing the old stones. Our guide, Sothy, pointed out tiny carvings I’d have missed—he said some date back almost a thousand years. The air smelled faintly of incense and wet grass after last night’s rain. By the time we reached Bayon temple, the sun was up and those huge smiling faces were catching gold light. I tried to count them all but gave up (Sothy laughed—he says nobody knows the real number).

Lunch was at Sras Srang, right by the Royal Baths. There was this gentle breeze coming off the water and a plate of fish amok that was way spicier than I expected (I’m still not sure if that was on purpose). Ta Prohm was next—the one with trees growing straight through the ruins. It felt like stepping into another world; roots as thick as my arm curling around ancient stones. There were tourists snapping photos but also these quiet pockets where you could just listen to cicadas buzzing and imagine how it looked centuries ago.

The second day got us further out: Preah Khan’s mossy corridors, Neak Pean’s odd little island temple (with dragon statues), then Banteay Srey where everything is pinkish stone and impossibly detailed carvings. The heat hit different out there—sticky and slow—and I remember buying a cold sugarcane juice from a woman who barely spoke English but smiled wide anyway.

On our last morning we drove to Tonle Sap Lake. The road out of town was bumpy; chickens everywhere. At the dock there were kids waving at us (one tried to sell me a bracelet—I caved). We took a boat across muddy water past floating houses and fishing nets strung between poles. Our guide explained how people here move their homes when the water rises each season—can’t imagine living like that but it made sense seeing it up close. The air smelled brackish but clean somehow, full of life. On the way back I just sat quietly watching the sky change color over the lake—I still think about that view sometimes.
