The experience

You get picked up from your hotel in Siem Reap and driven to Angkor Wat for sunrise: the temple complex spreads across 162 hectares and was originally built as a Hindu shrine before becoming Buddhist in the 12th century. Your guide walks you through the main sanctuary and explains the carvings and layout, then moves on to Ta Prohm, the jungle temple with massive tree roots breaking through its walls (it appeared in The Tomb Raider). The morning continues through Ta Keo, a 22-meter pyramid temple, and into Angkor Thom, the walled ancient city built around 1181 by King Jayavarman VII. You'll see the Terrace of the Elephants where the king watched his army return, and the Bayon, the state temple famous for its four stone faces of Buddha.

Day two takes you east to Beng Mealea, a remote temple 65 kilometers from town that sits largely unrestored, with trees and stones scattered through its courtyards. It feels less crowded than the main complex. From there you travel to Kompong Phluk, a fishing village built on stilts on the Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake. A private boat ride lets you move through the village and out onto the water, seeing how the community lives and fishes seasonally. You also stop at Rolous Market, a local trading hub where villagers buy everyday goods, giving you a glimpse of Cambodian life outside the tourist zones.

The tour includes cold water and towels throughout the day, an air-conditioned SUV or minivan, and an English-speaking guide who adjusts stops based on your interests. Hotel pickup is included. You arrange your own meals and pay temple admission fees separately at each site.

Kompong Phluk is a village built on stilts on Tonlé Sap Lake. A private boat ride takes you through the village and out onto the water to see how the fishing community lives and operates seasonally. The boat ride is arranged separately from the tour price.

Is the guide English-speaking, and can I ask them to slow down or spend more time somewhere?

Your guide speaks English and is with you the entire two days. Since this is a private tour, you set the pace. If you want to spend an extra hour at one temple or skip another site, your guide adjusts the itinerary to match what interests you.
