The Experience

I still remember how quiet it was before sunrise at Angkor Wat. We shuffled out of the car in the dark—our guide, Samnang, handed us strong coffee and grinned like he’d done this a thousand times. It’s wild there: trees growing right through the old stones, dragonflies everywhere. We barely saw anyone else except a farmer leading cows past the entrance. Later, at Kompong Phluk on Tonlé Sap Lake, we floated past houses on stilts—kids waved from wooden porches while their parents sorted fish below. The lake smelled earthy and alive; I kept thinking how water changes everything here. Sunlight glittered off tin roofs and for a second it all felt sort of suspended in time.
