A hands-on cooking class in Bulgaria where you learn to prepare three traditional Bulgarian dishes—chosen to match your skill level and taste—with a native instructor. The class includes a market visit (weather and weekday permitting) to select ingredients, kitchen equipment, and a meal when you finish. Children from age 5 are welcome; the kitchen is on the second floor with no elevator access.

The Experience

You'll spend six hours learning to cook dishes like burek, dolmas, gyuvetche or tikvenik—the menu adapts to what you want to make and what you already know how to do. Your host walks you through each technique, explains the Balkan culinary traditions behind them, and answers questions as you work. If the weather is clear and it's a working day, you'll go together to the Woman's market first to pick out the ingredients yourself, and your host will point out which products are traditional and how Bulgarian cooks choose them.

Once the cooking is done, you sit down to eat what you've made—either lunch or dinner depending on when your class runs. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need; you bring nothing but an appetite and a willingness to get your hands into the work. A cat lives in the kitchen, so let your host know in advance if that's a problem, or if you have food allergies they should plan around.

Your host speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and several other languages, so the instruction flows in whatever works for you. Pickup is included, and children from age 5 can join—though the second-floor kitchen has no elevator, so mobility matters if that's a factor for your group.

Do we really go to the market, or is that optional?

If the weather doesn't cooperate or it's a weekend, you'll cook with ingredients already on hand.

Is lunch or dinner included after we cook?
