Our guide met us at the hotel at 8am sharp — a quiet, no-nonsense woman named Petya who'd spent twenty years leading people through Bulgarian caves and knew exactly how much time we'd waste if we started late. The drive north takes about ninety minutes, and she spent it pointing out the limestone ridges that run through the region, explaining how the whole landscape underneath is basically hollowed out. Saeva Dupka comes first, and it's the smallest of the three — 400 meters of corridors and five galleries, which sounds modest until you're actually inside and the passage narrows and the air gets cold in a way that makes you understand why people used to think caves were alive.

Prohodna is the one everyone knows about. The two natural openings in the ceiling — the ones that look like eyes when you stand outside and look up — are why it's called the Eyes of God, and yeah, the name fits. You walk through the main chamber and the light comes down through those holes and hits the cave floor in two perfect circles, and for a moment you stop thinking about your feet and the uneven ground and just stand there. Petya let us sit for five minutes without talking, which I appreciated. The cave stretches back for kilometers, but the tour covers the accessible part, which is enough.

Devetashka is the longest and the most dramatic — 2,442 meters, 60 meters high in places, with formations that look like they're still growing even though they stopped thousands of years ago. The walk is steady but not brutal; the ground is rough and you need proper shoes (sandals won't work), and if you've got any issues with uneven surfaces or steep sections, this is where you'll feel it. But if you're comfortable with moderate hiking, it's manageable. The whole day runs about eight to ten hours depending on how long you linger in each cave, and by the time we got back to Sofia in the evening, my legs were tired in that good way that means you actually did something.
