The experience
Mediana is the centerpiece: a Roman estate that survived centuries with its granary, craft workshops, villas and bathhouse still visible. The mosaics are what stop most visitors: geometric patterns and floral designs cover the floors, but two stand out for their figures, including the head of Medusa and a river deity, probably Neptune. The museum holds sculptures of Roman gods, everyday objects like bowls and lamps, and the lead pipes that once carried hot water from the nearby Nis Spa. This is not a ruin you walk past. It is a place where you can read how people lived two thousand years ago.
Cele Kula (Skull Tower) is harder to look at and impossible to forget. Built in the 19th century, it documents Serbian resistance to Ottoman rule and stands as a unique monument in the world for that purpose. After that, the tour moves to Nis Fortress, where excavations have uncovered Roman-era remains, and the Archaeological Hall in town, which holds findings from the Royal Villa of Constantine the Great and artifacts dated back to 6000 BC. Constantine was born in Nis and became one of Rome's most important emperors. The city carries that weight. The final stop is a small but authentic WWII concentration camp built by the Germans to imprison and kill Jews, Roma and other minorities. You leave Nis around 4 p.m. and arrive back in Sofia around 6:30 p.m.
The tour runs 10 hours total and includes an air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide. Entrance fees are 10 euros per person, payable in cash or by card at each site. Food and drinks are not included, though the description notes that Nis has traditional Serbian grill restaurants (with vegetarian and vegan options) and street food if you want to eat during the day. Note that the border between Bulgaria and Serbia can be busy in July and August. The operator may take alternate routes, which could add a few hours. The sites and museums are closed on January 7 and January 14.
