The drive from Sofia takes you northwest into a landscape where nature has carved distinctive shapes from rock over millions of years. Belogradchik's formations are a nominated candidate for the New 7 Wonders of the World, and the guide points out the figures that local legend has attached to them (the Madonna, the Eagle, the Schoolgirl, Pinocchio), though the shapes shift depending on the angle and your imagination. The rocks are the main draw, but they exist in relation to Belogradchik Fortress, built during the Roman Empire and positioned among them.

The fortress itself requires climbing stairs to reach the highest sections, so the tour is suitable for all fitness levels as long as you can manage that climb. The structure sits within the rock formations, making the two attractions inseparable. You cannot see one without the other. If you want more movement, an optional 45-minute downhill hike loops around the rocks and gives a different perspective on the formations. Most people skip it or do part of it. It is genuinely optional, not a sales pitch. The tour builds in an hour for lunch, which you arrange and pay for on your own.
