The experience
You start at your hotel lobby in Bandar Seri Begawan at 8:30 am with a driver and professional guide. The first stop is Tamu Kianggeh, the open-air market where locals buy produce, spices, textiles and handicrafts. It's the place to see what people actually use and eat here, not a tourist version of one. From there you move to the Royal Regalia Museum in the heart of the capital, where the regalia of the Sultan and royal family are on display, including the encrusted crown and ceremonial objects from the Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's rule.
The tour then passes Istana Nurul Iman, the world's largest residential palace, for photographs from outside. You visit the Malay Technology Museum, which shows how Malays and the ethnic tribes of Brunei lived and worked, then stop at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque (one of the most beautiful in Southeast Asia), and the Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Brunei's largest and most significant mosque, both photo stops. At each mosque, women are given a black coat to wear, and shoes come off before entering. The afternoon takes you to Kampong Ayer, known as the Venice of the East because the houses sit on stilts over the water. You visit a local house, have light refreshments with Malay traditional cuisine, and then eat buffet lunch at a local restaurant. The tour ends with a drive past Jerudong Park and the Empire Hotel, a night market visit, and the mall.
The guide speaks English and travels with you the whole day in an air-conditioned vehicle. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for selected hotels in Bandar Seri Begawan. Note that mosques and museums close on Fridays, so the tour cannot run that day, and no photographs are allowed inside either the mosques or the Brunei Museum. A minimum of two people per booking is required, and the guide has the right to change or reduce stops depending on weather, road and tidal conditions.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What is Tamu Kianggeh and what will I see there?
Tamu Kianggeh is Bandar Seri Begawan's open-air market where locals shop for produce, spices, textiles and handicrafts. It's the working market of the city, not a tourist bazaar, so you see what residents actually buy and use.
Can I take photographs inside the mosques and museums?
No photographs are allowed inside the mosques or the Brunei Museum. Both are photo stops from the outside, and you can photograph Kampong Ayer and the other exterior sites freely.
What do I need to know about visiting the mosques?
Women are required to wear a black coat provided by the mosque before entering. Everyone must remove shoes before stepping inside. The mosques are closed on Fridays, so the tour cannot operate that day.
Is lunch included, and what kind of food will I eat?
Yes, buffet lunch is served at a local restaurant as part of the tour. Light refreshments with Malay traditional cuisine are also provided during the house visit in Kampong Ayer.
What is Kampong Ayer and why is it called the Venice of the East?
Kampong Ayer is a settlement built on stilts over the water in Bandar Seri Begawan, which is why it earned the nickname Venice of the East. You visit a local house there and have refreshments with a family.
Can the tour be changed or cancelled if the weather is bad?
Yes, the guide has the right to change the route, re-route stops, or reduce destinations depending on weather, road and tidal conditions, so some sites may be skipped or rearranged on the day.
