Underwater gardens and a working sailboat, not a tour boat

Sailing and snorkeling to Norman Island is a six-hour boat trip from Road Town that puts you in the water at the Caves, the Indians (weather permitting) and Pirates Bight beach, with snorkeling equipment, lunch and drinks served throughout the day. The boat is a working sailboat, not a catamaran built for crowds, and the route crosses open water—the ride itself is part of the day, not just transport to the stops.

Step-by-step itinerary

Sail and snorkel around Norman Island

  • Sail from Road Town to Norman Island
  • Snorkel at the Caves
  • Snorkel at the Indians (weather permitting)
  • Visit the beach at Pirates Bight
  • Optional stops at Angelfish Reef and Kelly's Cove
  • Sail back to Road Town

The Experience

The boat leaves Road Town and sails across the channel to Norman Island, where the underwater landscape changes with each stop. The Caves are the signature site—a rock formation with swim-through passages and reefs that drop into deeper water; the Indians is a shallow reef system with coral heads and schooling fish, though weather can close it. Pirates Bight is a beach stop where you can wade ashore or stay in the shallows. Between stops, the boat moves under sail when conditions allow, which means the crossing is not a motorized ferry ride but an actual sailing experience—the kind where you feel the hull move and the crew adjusts the canvas.

Snorkeling equipment is provided and fitted onboard. Lunch is freshly prepared and served while you're anchored—the menu includes vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian options—and drinks (water, sodas, beer, wine and Tito's vodka) are available throughout the day. There's a restroom on board. The trip runs six hours total, and the itinerary notes that Angelfish Reef and Kelly's Cove are potential stops depending on conditions and how the day unfolds.

Infants and small children can come along (a pram or stroller works on deck), and the operator notes the trip suits all fitness levels. What you're not arranging: the boat, the captain, the guide who knows where the fish are, the equipment, the food, the route timing or the decision about which stops are safe that day.

Is this one for you? You're snorkeling from a working sailboat, not a tour boat, so the crossing to Norman Island is part of the day—book this if you want the sailing experience alongside the underwater stops, not just the reefs. The shared boat and fixed schedule mean the cost stays low and the crew knows the sites; if you need privacy or a custom route, a private charter is the different product to compare.
