The experience
The tour starts on Paulista Avenue, where you walk past the modern skyscrapers that define the street's architecture. From there, you take the subway to Liberdade station, the heart of the world's largest Japanese community outside Japan. The neighborhood's markets, shops and Japanese-style street lamps give the area its distinct character. If the timing works, the Sunday Art, Craft and Culture Fair fills the streets with vendors and food stalls where you can try Korean Melana ice cream and other regional treats.
From Liberdade, you walk to the historic center on foot, passing the Sé Cathedral, Pátio do Colégio, the Tea Viaduct, the Matarazzo building and the Municipal Theatre. The guide explains how the Luz train station became the gateway for millions of immigrants who arrived by ship at Santos and traveled inland by rail, transforming São Paulo from a small town into a major metropolis over the 20th century. You end the tour back at the subway to return to Paulista Avenue.
The subway itself is part of the experience: instead of narrating from a bus window, you move through the city the way locals do, getting off at each station to explore on foot. This means you see the neighborhoods at street level and have time to walk through markets and side streets rather than passing them by.
What’s included
