The Experience

The tour starts at Pátio do Colégio, the historic founding site where Jesuits built the first school in 1554 and set in motion what would become the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere. From there, the route moves through the city's architectural layers: the Manor of the Marchioness of Santos, a residence from the 18th century; Sé Cathedral, inspired by medieval European churches and marking the symbolic center of São Paulo; and Largo São Francisco Law School, which produced nine Brazilian presidents and launched major historical movements from abolitionism to the campaign for direct elections during the military dictatorship.

The middle stretch takes you past the economic and cultural heart of the city. You'll see the Martinelli building, Latin America's first skyscraper, which sparked controversy when it rose in the 1920s; the Sampaio Moreira building, the tallest in the city before Martinelli arrived; and the Monastery of São Bento, where Gregorian chant masses draw both believers and visitors, and monks sell their own breads and jams. A stop at the Brazil Bank's Cultural Center — a 1901 neoclassical building with five floors — gives you a chance to use the restrooms or grab a drink before continuing to the Stock Exchange and the Altino Arantes building.

The tour climbs to the Farol Santander observation deck, where a 360-degree view of São Paulo spreads below you — the city's scale becomes real from up there. Entry is included. The final stretch passes City Hall and the Sampaio Moreira building before ending at Municipal Theater, a postcard landmark where the Week of Modern Art took place in 1922 and where you can stand in front of its architecture without rushing.
