The experience
The day starts with a 90-minute drive from your São Paulo hotel to Santos, where the funicular tram climbs Mont Serrat every 20 minutes. From the top, the viewpoint takes in the entire port, the largest in Latin America, the city sprawl, the Bertioga Canal, and the islands beyond. The cable car itself is the access. There is no hiking involved. Afterward, breakfast and a walk through the Coffee Museum let you taste coffees ground on the spot and learn how coffee shaped Brazil's economy.
The restored city center and its beaches come next. Santos holds the world's largest beach garden (5,335 meters of continuous, flat sand lined with flowers and trees), and you drive the full 8-kilometer stretch. The port traffic never stops. Ships move constantly through one of the hemisphere's busiest harbors. Then you head to Porchat Island, where a monument on the hilltop frames views of the shoreline, Saint Vincent (the first permanent Portuguese settlement in Brazil), and the horizon where paragliders drift overhead.
A ferry boat takes you across to Guarujá, a family-oriented beach town with snack bars, restaurants, and vendors renting chairs, umbrellas, and boards. The beach has soft sand and small waves suited to swimming. You have time to eat, drink, and sit before the return journey to São Paulo.
