The Experience

Tijuca National Park sprawls across the hills above Rio, and a jeep gets you deeper into the forest than a car on pavement ever could. You'll drive past dense tropical vegetation, stop at observation points where the city falls away below you, and walk into the forest itself to see the diversity of plants and animals that thrive in this pocket of Atlantic rainforest. The Chinese View opens only Monday through Friday and frames the city in one direction; Canoas viewpoint sits at another angle. The waterfall at Taunay is where the tour becomes a water activity. You'll swim in the natural lagoon beneath it, so bring a towel and clothes you don't mind getting wet. The guide will point out what grows here, what lives here, and how this forest works as a system.
