The experience
The evening starts with a drive from your hotel in Foz do Iguaçu to Puerto Iguazú, about 17 km away. You'll spend roughly an hour browsing the Duty Free Mall near customs, where the shops stock perfumes, cosmetics, makeup, chocolates, beverages, sunglasses, clothes and electronics at prices that draw visitors from across the region. The air-conditioned vehicle waits while you shop, and your guide handles the border crossing logistics.
Dinner happens at Guamini Restaurant, set in a space designed to echo the Jesuit ruins of San Ignacio. The menu runs three courses: a starter of empanadas (knife-cut meat or Surubí fish) with mixed leaves and fried cassava; a main of either chorizo steak with rustic potatoes and chimichurri or fish of the day with baked vegetables, plus a vegetable brochette option; and dessert of sliced regional fruits with yerba mate ice cream or coconut pudding with dulce de leche. While you eat, a live tango performance unfolds: the dancers and the history of the dance itself are part of the evening. Before heading back, you'll also stop at the Wine Shop in the Argentine Fair.
The whole outing takes five and a half hours door to door. Your guide travels with the group and speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese. Children can come along. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, or sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one.
