The Experience

The tour opens in Trancoso, a village about an hour from Porto Seguro. You start at Vale Verde, where the first stop is a tasting of regional liqueurs and coconuts, then move to the Quadrado—the central plaza ringed by 17th and 18th-century colonial buildings that have made the village internationally known. The afternoon settles into Praia dos Coqueiros for roughly four hours, where beach huts and the water itself are the point; you're not rushing through.

Day two crosses to Arraial d'Ajuda by ferry—a ten-minute crossing included in the tour. The beach of Mucugê is the first stop, with four hours to stay. The late afternoon moves into the village of Arraial d'Ajuda itself, which has its own rhythm and restaurants. Day three heads south about 70 kilometers to Espelho Beach, which the operator names as the third most beautiful beach in Brazil. The route passes Vale dos Búfalos on the way. On clear days the water shifts from green to a blue so clear it gave the beach its name; the high cliffs above the sand are the vantage for photographs and the climb itself.

The final day is the city tour. Porto Seguro's historic center is where the first European settlement in Brazil took root. The stops include the Marco do Descobrimento—the stone landmark Portugal set between 1503 and 1526 to mark its territorial claim—along with the museum, the chamber, churches and squares. A capoeira presentation is part of the day, showing the sport-dance-fight form that blends movement, music and acrobatics. You also taste acarajé, the Bahian street food.
