The Experience

I didn’t expect my first real taste of Petrópolis to be a buttery slice of pão de queijo at Casa do Alemão, but here we were—sleepy from the drive out of Rio, clutching strong coffee and watching locals greet each other like old friends. The air felt cooler than Rio’s sticky heat, and there was this faint smell of pine that kept sneaking in through the open door. Our guide, Lucas, grinned as he explained why this city was called the “Imperial City”—I sort of half-listened, distracted by the mix of German signs and Portuguese chatter.

The Imperial Museum looked almost too perfect from outside—white columns against green hills—but inside it felt quieter, heavy with history. Lucas told us stories about Dom Pedro II (I’ll admit I had to Google him later), and I caught myself staring at a velvet chair behind glass for way too long. There’s something odd about seeing royal outfits up close; I kept imagining how hot those layers must have been in summer. We wandered past carriages and portraits while rain tapped gently on the windows—felt like time slowed down for a bit.

Lunch was at this buffet spot where everyone just dove in—rice steaming, feijoada bubbling away, people piling plates high without fuss. No one rushed us. Afterward we ducked into the Crystal Palace—sunlight bouncing off all that glass—and then finally made it to Bohemia Brewery. The brewery tour was more fun than I expected (I’m not really a beer person), especially when we got to taste three different brews. The malty smell hit you right as you walked in; our tasting guide cracked jokes about which beer matched our personalities (I got “the classic,” whatever that means). On the way back we stopped for chocolates at Katz—I bought some for later but ate them before we even left town. So yeah, self-control: zero.

I still think about that velvet chair sometimes, or maybe just how easy it felt to slip into someone else’s story for a day. Petrópolis isn’t loud or flashy—it’s more like wandering through an old photo album with new friends who don’t mind if you linger over dessert.
