The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing inside Fortaleza de Santa Catarina. The walls are rough under your hand, cool even in the afternoon heat. Our guide—Marcos, I think—pointed out cannon marks and told us how the fort once guarded this whole stretch of Paraíba’s north coast. He had this way of pausing for effect, letting the sea breeze fill in the silence. I tried to imagine ships where now there’s just quiet water and a couple of fishermen waving from their boats.

We stopped at Cabedelo next, right by the Marco Zero of the Transamazônica. It’s not much to look at (just a sign and some faded paint), but Marcos grinned and said it means you’ve officially started or ended a journey across Brazil. I liked that idea. After that, we headed for Ponta de Campina Beach. The water was warmer than I expected—almost like stepping into tea—and salty enough to sting my lips. There were kids splashing each other, their laughter carrying all the way up to where we’d left our flip-flops in the sand.

The real reason most people book this day trip from João Pessoa is sunset at Jacaré Beach. You get time to wander the boardwalk and poke around little stalls selling wooden dolphins or woven bags (I bought a fridge magnet shaped like a crab—couldn’t resist). Then, as it gets dusky pink over the river, Jurandy do Sax appears on his boat and starts playing Ravel’s Bolero. The sound floats over everything; people go quiet for a minute, phones forgotten. I got goosebumps—didn’t expect that either. There’s an option for a catamaran ride too; some folks danced forró with these guys dressed as cangaceiros. I mostly watched and tried not to spill my coconut water.

Right before we left, Jurandy played Ave Maria as night settled in. It felt like everyone was holding their breath for those few minutes—the kind of hush you only get when something really matters to people here. On the drive back, I kept thinking about that light on the river and how music can make strangers feel like they’re sharing something big together.
