The experience
You leave your hotel on João Pessoa's coast and drive 49 kilometers south to Lucena in a shared 4x4. The route itself is part of the day: you're moving through the landscape rather than watching it pass. Once there, the guide walks you through the history of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church, the only one in the world with its entire facade built in tropical baroque style. It's a small structure with outsized architectural weight, and the guide's knowledge of how it came to be shapes what you're looking at.
From the church, the real scale of the tour opens up. You cross into the coconut plantation: more than 500,000 trees arranged in rows that stretch to the horizon. It's not a manicured garden. It's working farmland, and the sheer number of palms creates a landscape most visitors to Brazil never see. The trail then takes you to the Bomsucesso viewpoint, where the cliffs drop away and you get a panoramic view of Lucena spread below. If the tide is low when you arrive at Pontinha de Lucena, you walk the natural rock path that locals call "Moses' path": a phenomenon that only appears when the water recedes far enough. The guide times the stops around the tides, so this part of the day depends on when you're traveling.
The final stop is the Miriri River, where the water is calm and clear enough to wade into. Before heading back to João Pessoa, you visit the ruins of Bomsucesso Church, a Carmelite structure from centuries past. A massive gameleira tree still grows through part of the ruin, holding up stone that would otherwise have collapsed. The return journey takes you back along the same route, arriving at your hotel after five to six hours away.
