The experience
The Amazon rainforest near Manaus becomes your classroom. You travel into the jungle with a guide who walks you through the practical skills people use to live in this environment: locating and purifying water, building fire without matches, finding salt, identifying which plants are edible and which are dangerous, constructing emergency shelters from branches and leaves, and setting traps for food. Each topic includes both instruction and a live demonstration so you see the technique before you try it.
This is not a tour where you watch from a distance. You handle the materials, attempt the skills and work through the problems the jungle actually presents. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and stays with your group throughout. Bring a hat, sunscreen, long sleeves, long trousers, socks and hiking boots. A rain jacket is essential, and insect repellent is strongly recommended. The operator suggests packing a change of clothes and personal items in waterproof bags in case of water crossings.
You pass Ponta Negra Beach on the way to the jungle entrance. The class runs five to six hours, and the guide brings water to keep you hydrated. Hotel pickup is included in the booking.

Is this one for you?Small groups work best for hands-on instruction, so you get time to practice each skill with the guide's attention. If you want to learn survival techniques rather than observe wildlife, this class gives you the chance to actually do the work instead of watching a demonstration.
