The experience
The day starts with a speedboat transfer to the jungle, then you walk the trail with instructors who stop regularly to teach you how to orient yourself without a compass, how to build improvised traps, and the rules for constructing a shelter that will hold. Two instructors stay with the group (one leading and one behind), so instruction happens as you move through the forest rather than in a classroom. The teaching covers what plants are medicinal and why, and details about how the forest works that guides usually skip.
Lunch is a barbecue prepared in the jungle where you eat together and continue learning. The full day runs 8.5 hours from pickup to return, and the operator has been running this same program for 20 years. Guides speak English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group, and the company is listed in the National Geographic International Travel book.
