The experience
What makes this different from a standard viewpoint is the floor itself. You're walking on glass, which means the valley floor is visible directly beneath your feet as you step out onto a platform that juts 68 meters past the cliff edge. The structure is supported by steel cables that flex slightly. A deliberate design that gives the platform stability without the rigidity of solid steel. There's 35 meters of clearance after the central pillar, so you move through open space with nothing between you and the view. A deck area lets you stop and take photographs or simply stand still and look out across the Vale da Ferradura.
The platform has a food court with fast food, café and wine, so you can spend time there without leaving. The ticket also grants entry to the Iron Memorial, an exhibition space at the base that walks through the evolution of iron as an object in daily life. If you're arriving in the late afternoon, the sunset views from the deck are the main draw for many visitors. The whole visit runs between 2 and 3 hours depending on how long you spend on the platform and in the museum.
You cannot bring personal belongings or items that might fall into the valley. This is an environmental protection rule, so pack accordingly. The platform is wheelchair accessible, and all surfaces and areas are designed to accommodate mobility devices. Infants can be brought in a pram or stroller, or held on an adult's lap. Service animals are allowed. The experience is not recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health or acute labyrinthitis.
