Offroad to the waterfall's base, then the stories that got you there

A 3-hour tour from Canela that traces the route of Caracol's first resident to the foot of Cascata do Caracol, combining offroad transport through Vale da Lageana, a little-explored hiking trail, and a visit to Casa da Vó Ivonne, where you hear the history of the German settlers who discovered the waterfall. A Portuguese-speaking guide accompanies the group. Closed hiking boots are required.

The Experience

What makes this different from the standard waterfall viewpoint is that you're not standing on an overlook. You're at the base of the cascade itself, reached by the same route Guilherme Wasem took when he first found it. The tour starts at Casa da Vó Ivonne on Estrada da Lageana, a restored home that holds the memories and stories of the area's earliest residents. From there, you ride in a thematic offroad vehicle through the private property of Vale da Lageana, following the landscape as it was discovered, not as it's been developed.

The trail itself is little-explored, which means you're not walking a paved path worn smooth by thousands of boots. You hike on terrain that requires closed, sturdy footwear: thin-soled or social shoes won't work, and the guide will turn back anyone without proper boots. Once you reach the foot of the waterfall, there's time for photos and a moment on the Infinito Balance, a platform positioned right in front of the cascade. The guide narrates the history as you move through it: the story of the first settlers, how the waterfall was once dismissed as legend, and how this corner of the Serra Gaúcha became the birthplace of tourism in both Canela and Gramado.

The experience wraps with a picnic-style stop that recalls the origins of the region's German settlers. A pause to absorb what you've walked through rather than a rushed transition. Bring a charged phone. The exclusive nature of this route means the views are worth recording. Arrive 20 minutes early at Casa da Vó Ivonne. Transport to the departure point is not included, so plan your own way there.

Is this one for you? This tour is led and shared, so you're part of a group following a guide's route and pace rather than exploring on your own. Choose it if you want the history and the story of how the waterfall was discovered woven into the walk itself: the guide's knowledge of Guilherme Wasem and the German settlers is what transforms a hike into a journey through the region's origins.

Top questions

What's the actual hike like at the foot of Caracol Falls?

The trail to Pé da Cascata is little-explored and requires closed hiking boots with good grip, no thin-soled shoes. You walk on natural terrain that demands proper footwear, and the guide enforces this requirement. Once you reach the base of the waterfall, you have time for photos and access to the Infinito Balance platform positioned in front of the cascade.

Who was Guilherme Wasem and why does his story matter on this tour?

Guilherme Wasem was the first resident of Caracol and the person who discovered Cascata do Caracol: a waterfall that many locals dismissed as legend until he found it. The tour follows the exact path he took through Vale da Lageana, and your guide tells his family's story and the history of German settlement in the region as you walk the same ground.

What happens at Casa da Vó Ivonne?

Casa da Vó Ivonne is a restored home on Estrada da Lageana that serves as both the departure point and a stop during the tour. It preserves the memories and stories of the area's first residents, and the experience includes a picnic-style moment there that reflects the origins of the German settlers who opened up the region to tourism.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?

Yes, transport to Casa da Vó Ivonne (Estrada da Lageana, 285, Bairro Caracol) is not included. You'll need to arrange your own way there and arrive 20 minutes before the departure time. The offroad vehicle and all transport during the tour itself are included.

Is this tour suitable if I have mobility concerns or health conditions?

The tour involves hiking on uneven terrain and riding in an offroad vehicle. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Infants must sit on an adult's lap during the vehicle portion. If you have specific concerns, contact the operator before booking.
