The experience
The tour departs at 7:20am to reach Christ the Redeemer before the crowds arrive. The statue sits 710 meters above sea level on Corcovado Mountain, and from there you get a 360-degree view of Rio. The climb takes roughly two hours with the car ride, minibus shuttle and time at the top. Admission to Christ the Redeemer is separate, as is entry to Sugarloaf.
From Corcovado you head to Selarón Steps, a 215-step stairway that connects the neighbourhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa. In 1990, Chilean artist Jorge Selarón began covering the stairs with tiles in an obsessive project that eventually covered every step. The work has appeared in music videos, commercials and travel documentaries. This stop takes about an hour including the drive. Then you move on to Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio's second most visited monument at 396 metres high. Four cable car rides carry you up, each lasting three minutes, and from the top you see Copacabana, Botafogo and Flamengo beaches, the Rio-Niterói bridge and Guanabara Bay. Budget two hours here with transport and viewing time.
The tour is entirely private, once you book, it's only you and your companions with the guide. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, German or Russian, and pickup from your hotel is included. The vehicle is air-conditioned and fully accessible.
Is this one for you?The guide speaks your language (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German or Russian), so commentary flows naturally for your whole group. Early departure at 7:20am is what keeps the three main attractions inside five hours and avoids the midday queues at Corcovado.
