The experience
The bike lets you move through the Monumental Axis at a pace that stops at each landmark without the constraint of a car route. You'll start at the agency, then ride to the Clube do Choro de Brasília, a venue built to honor Brazilian cultural roots and designed by Oscar Niemeyer. From there the route takes in the Hemispheric Planetarium, the Ayrton Senna Sports Complex stadium (opened in 1974 with capacity for 45,200), the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, and the Buriti Palace, seat of the Federal District Government since 1969. The perspective shifts with each stop: what reads as abstract geometry from a car becomes a sequence of spaces you move through.
The JK Memorial itself, also designed by Niemeyer and opened in 1981, houses a museum and the burial chamber of Juscelino Kubitschek, the former president who founded Brasília. Nearby stands the Indigenous Peoples Memorial, built in 1987 in a spiral shape inspired by a Yanomami maloca, and a chapel built for Pope John Paul II's 1991 visit. The route closes at the Crystal Square, an equilateral triangle of 102,000 square meters formed by flower beds, water mirrors, and concrete crystals meant to represent the riches of the Plateau.
You ride with a helmet (provided, though not mandatory in Brazil) and carry a 500ml bottle of water. If you're traveling with children ages 4 to 12, an articulated tandem trailer attaches to a bike: request this when you book. The tour suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers. Public transportation is available nearby if you need an alternative to cycling any portion of the route.
