The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect Brasilia to feel so…otherworldly. The first thing I noticed was the light—kind of sharp and blue, bouncing off all these white curves and glass. We met our guide Ana near the Cathedral of Brasília (that crown shape is wild up close), and she told us how Niemeyer wanted it to “float.” It does look like it could lift off if you stared long enough. There was this faint echo inside, even with just a few people whispering prayers or snapping photos. The smell of wax from the little chapel candles stuck with me for some reason.

We took the city tour by car because my knees aren’t what they used to be (Ana said bikes are fun too if you’re braver). She drove us along these huge avenues where everything feels spaced out on purpose—like you need time to take it in. At the National Congress, security guards were lounging in the shade and Ana explained how tours run in English or Portuguese depending on the day. She pointed out details I’d never have spotted: tiny carvings on doors, how the shadows fall at noon. I tried to pronounce “Congresso Nacional” properly—she laughed and said I was close enough.

The city’s got this mix of official and almost playful architecture—the blue stained glass at Dom Bosco church looked unreal when sunlight hit it just right. We stopped for coffee at a museum café; old photos of Brasília’s construction were everywhere, some guys in hard hats grinning like they knew they were building something weird and huge. There was a breeze coming off Lake Paranoá when we reached JK Bridge—kids fishing nearby, motorbikes humming past. If you want photos, Ana knows exactly where to stop for that skyline shot (she even snapped some for us on her camera). Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes.
