The Experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and runs nine hours on the water. You'll see the Meeting of Waters first—two different rivers flowing alongside each other without their waters mixing, a phenomenon the region is known for. From there the boat takes you to a floating village where over a hundred families live on houses built on the water, complete with a school, church and shops. Inside the village sits a fish farm where you can interact with the Pirarucu, the largest scaled fish species in the world and a true river giant.

Lunch happens at a park within the floating village, where the buffet centers on regional cuisine with a wide variety of fish and salads, plus vegetarian options. You get a drink included—soda, a regional juice made with mineral water, or bottled water—though beer is available to buy. After lunch you visit an indigenous village to learn about the life and culture of the first true Amazonian people, see how they keep their traditions, and participate in a traditional ritual if you want to. Souvenirs are available there too.

The final stop is a research platform run by the National Institute of Research on Amazonian Pink River Dolphins. You'll learn about these creatures that live free in the region, then enter the water to swim with them as they come close to interact. The boat and an air-conditioned vehicle handle all transport between stops. A small group cap of 10 people keeps the experience from feeling crowded, and the guide—fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese—stays with you the whole day.
