You grind raw cocoa beans on a Mayan stone tool and eat the chocolate you made.

This combined activity in Placencia pairs ziplining through the jungle canopy with an ATV ride through the rainforest and a hands-on chocolate-making session at a working cocoa farm. A guide leads the whole day in English or Spanish, with hotel pickup included. You'll taste fresh cocoa straight from the plant, operate a traditional stone grinder to make 100% natural chocolate, and sample tropical fruits picked directly off trees during the ATV portion.

Step-by-step itinerary

Chocolate making and jungle ATV tour

  • Visit cocoa farm and meet farmers
  • Taste raw cocoa bean and learn harvesting
  • Make and taste natural chocolate
  • Ride ATV through Belizean rainforest
  • Sample fresh fruits from trees

The experience

The day starts at a cocoa farm where you meet the farmers and walk the rows to see how the beans grow. You taste a raw cocoa pod fresh from the plant, then learn the family traditions passed down for generations. In the second half of the farm visit, you use a Matate, a flat Mayan stone tool, to grind roasted cocoa beans by hand into chocolate. All the ingredients are natural with no additives or wax. You choose the cocoa percentage you want (most guests pick 85% dark) and take home what you make.

After chocolate, you move to the ATV portion. You ride through the lush rainforest canopy on your own vehicle (single or double seater, your choice) at whatever pace suits you. The guide stops along the way to point out the flora and fauna, and you can pick and taste fresh fruits straight off the trees: coconuts, soursop, blackberries, bananas and more. The whole experience runs 4 to 5 hours and includes an air-conditioned vehicle for transport, bottled water, and all facility fees.
