Garifuna and Maya cultural experiences

  • Hands-on Garifuna cooking class
  • Learn traditional drumming and storytelling
  • Enjoy authentic local cuisine
  • Visit Maya organic cacao farm
  • Participate in bean-to-bar chocolate making

The experience

You start with a pickup from your Hopkins accommodation and kayak out to Kalipuna Island, where Garifuna cooks teach you to prepare a traditional dish using fresh, organic island ingredients. The class moves beyond watching: you handle the food, learn the techniques, and listen to stories about ancestral heritage while a local guide walks you through the cultural roots of what you're making. A rhythm of drumming and storytelling fills the morning before you sit down to eat what your hands made.

After lunch, you travel inland to a Maya community and a working organic cacao farm. Here the second hands-on session begins: you visit the farm itself, then roast cacao beans and grind them on a traditional stone metate the way the Maya have for centuries. The guide explains why cacao held spiritual and cultural weight in Maya civilization, and by the end you take home the chocolate you made. The day wraps with the return journey to Hopkins, arriving back roughly seven to eight hours after you left.

Transport, kayak, bottled water, snacks and lunch are included. The guide is English-speaking and can work around vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free needs if you flag them before you book. Alcoholic beverages come with the meal for travelers eighteen and older. Bring sunscreen and plan for time in the sun and on the water.
