The experience

Five jenevers meet five chocolates in this 90-minute tasting at the Chocolade Ambassade, a chocolate shop tucked inside a 16th-century Flemish stairhouse near the castle. The tasting pairs local jenevers (including a 10-year-aged pour that tastes closer to whiskey than gin) with high-quality chocolates from four different Belgian makers. Jenever is less known than Belgian beer but sits at the root of gin itself. This tasting introduces you to the range of what the spirit can be when aged and crafted by hand.

One of the shop's two founders personally leads the group through each pairing, walking through the craft and history behind both chocolate and jenever. The room holds a maximum of six people, and stays around 18°C to keep the chocolate in condition. Bring a sweater if you run cold. After the tasting ends, you can buy chocolates to take with you, and the founders offer recommendations for where to find jenever and other craft foods around Ghent.
