The experience
Two hours in the water is how long it takes to go from standing on the beach to riding your first wave. The instructors pick the best break on the day (Barbados has excellent conditions year-round), and meet you there after pickup from your hotel. You'll get a surfboard, rash guard and wax. The water stays warm, and the waves are forgiving for learners.
A qualified instructor enters the water with you and stays there the whole lesson. The team has 30 years of collective experience and has competed at ISA and WSL levels, but they're trained to keep things calm and fun rather than intense. They'll show you how to paddle, pop up and balance, then watch while you practice. You need to be a confident swimmer, that's the main requirement, and at least moderately fit, but you don't need any prior board experience.
Pickup is included from your hotel. The minimum age is 6, though very young children can sit with an adult if they're not in the water yet. Spinal injuries, pregnancy and serious heart conditions aren't compatible with the lesson, so check your health before booking.
