I didn’t expect my first real taste of Bahrain to be the smell of engine oil and sand at the same time. But that’s exactly what hit me as we rolled up to the Grand Prix Circuit—our guide, Khalid, grinned like he knew I’d be impressed. He pointed out the pit lane and joked that if I could name three F1 drivers, he’d buy me a coffee (I couldn’t). The place was quiet except for distant birds and the low hum from somewhere behind the stands. We took a quick photo by the track—my hair immediately full of desert wind.

After that rush, things slowed down at the Royal Camel Farm. The air smelled sweet and earthy—like hay left in the sun too long. One camel tried to nibble my sleeve while another made this deep grumbling noise that sounded almost like laughter. Khalid told us about how important camels are here; it felt oddly calming after all that talk about speed. Then we bumped along to Bahrain’s 1st Oil Well, which honestly looked less dramatic than I pictured but had this faded sign with peeling paint—felt like stepping into someone else’s memory.

The main keyword for me? The Tree of Life. You drive through nothing but flat beige land and suddenly there it is—gnarled branches against a sky so bright it almost hurts your eyes. It was silent except for wind and our footsteps crunching on dry ground. Khalid said no one really knows how it survives out here; I still think about that tree when I’m stuck in city traffic now. There was something stubbornly hopeful about it.
