The experience
Manama's Al Fateh Grand Mosque opens the morning. Built between 1984 and 1988, it occupies 6,500 square meters and holds up to 7,000 worshippers. A professional mosque guide walks you through its Islamic center, which also houses a Qur'anic studies department and library. From there, the Bahrain National Museum (inaugurated in 1988 and considered one of the Gulf region's finest) provides context for the island's history through its collections. The route then turns to Muharraq, Bahrain's former capital, where narrow lanes reveal restored traditional houses with carved wooden doors and perforated gypsum panels. The Sheikh Isa bin Ali House stands as the most impressive example of Gulf Islamic architecture in the area.
Bahrain Fort (Qal'at Al Bahrain) anchors the morning's end. This archaeological tell (an artificial mound built up over centuries) layers human occupation from around 2300 BC through the 16th century AD, and its coastal position frames the sparkling water and city skyline. A traditional Bahraini lunch at a local restaurant breaks the day before the afternoon leg. The Camel Farm in Zallaq holds over 500 camels descended from the animals that once carried goods across the desert. They're accustomed to visitors and photo stops. The Bahrain International Circuit, built in the Sakhir desert in 2004, hosted the Middle East's first Formula 1 Grand Prix and continues to draw major motorsport events. The first oil well in the Arabian Gulf (which struck oil on June 2, 1932, at an initial flow of 400 barrels per hour) sits below Jebel Dukhan, the island's highest point at 134 meters. The day closes at the Tree of Life, a mesquite that has stood alone on a 25-foot sandy hill for over 400 years, reaching 32 feet tall without visible water or neighboring trees.
The tour runs seven hours with pickup from your hotel and a licensed guide who can conduct the tour in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of four other languages. Refreshments are provided throughout, and all sites are wheelchair accessible with surfaces and transportation adapted for mobility needs.
