The experience
The Al Fateh Grand Mosque opens the tour: its fiberglass dome, the world's largest of its kind, rises against palm trees and the sea. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome. You'll remove your shoes and cover your head (women) before entering. The guide explains the architecture and its place in Bahraini life, then the route moves to the Bahrain National Museum, which sits on the edge of the sea and opened in 1988 as one of the Gulf's first museums. The white travertine façade and courtyard sculptures frame the galleries where you learn the island's history, culture and traditions.
After the museum, a short walk through Bahrain Bay gives you a photo opportunity at the Bahrain World Trade Center: the 240-meter twin tower complex built in 2008 and the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design. The final stop is Capital Mall, where Bahraini handmade products and micro-enterprise goods are on display. The tour runs four hours total, with a local guide who speaks English and Arabic, and includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
