The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Freeport hotel and two optional stops: the Bahamian Brewery, where you see how seven types of beer are made, and the Bahamas Distilling Co, where five rums and a gin are produced. Then you move to the Open Air Farmers Market to try conch fritters and browse small vendor stalls (bring cash for shopping). Port Lucaya Marketplace comes next, with larger shops, the Bahamas Maritime Museum, Bootleg Chocolates, jewelry stores and a local artist's studio. Plan 30 to 45 minutes here depending on how much you want to shop.

The route then takes you to Taino Beach to watch conch salad made fresh in front of you, then on to Smith's Point, Sanctuary Bay (home to dolphins), and Millionaire's Row, where you'll see the grand homes of Grand Bahama's wealthiest residents. Garden of the Groves, a 40-acre botanical garden with a chapel, labyrinth and specialty shops, is optional on the way east. Admission is separate and the walk takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Lucayan National Park is the centerpiece: Gold Rock Beach stretches for miles with turquoise water and white sand. Lunch happens here: homemade bread rolls, cold cuts, two types of cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and the guide's own Bahama Mamas made with gold and coconut rums and fresh fruit juices. After eating and swimming or sunbathing, you walk Ben's Cave and Burial Mound on the other side of the road (30 to 45 minutes). If time allows, the tour continues east to High Rock, a coastal settlement where you can visit the Lighthouse Chapel and the Famous Bishop's Bar and Restaurant. The whole day runs between four and seven hours depending on which stops you choose and how long you spend at each one.
