experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers before noon. Our guide, Mamma Gal, greeted us near Port Lucaya with this huge grin and a wave that made it feel like she’d known us forever. The van was already humming with reggae when we set off east toward Lucayan National Park. I kept trying to catch the names of little settlements we passed—Free Town, High Rock—but the windows were foggy from the morning heat and salt air. Someone asked about Pirates of the Caribbean filming here; Mamma Gal just winked and said she’d show us exactly where Johnny Depp stood. That cracked everyone up.

The park itself surprised me. You hear “national park” and picture big forests or mountains, but here it’s all tangled mangroves and limestone caves. The air smelled kind of sweet and earthy—like wet leaves after rain. We ducked into Ben’s Cave (I nearly hit my head), and it was so quiet down there you could hear water dripping far off. I kept thinking about how old everything must be under our feet. Mamma Gal told us about Lucayan people who used these caves for shelter, her voice echoing a bit in the dark.

Gold Rock Beach is… well, I’m not going to try to describe the color of that sand because I’ll mess it up, but walking barefoot felt almost cold at first. The tide had pulled back so far we could walk forever without getting wet. Someone found a tiny crab; another tried to skip shells (not very successfully). Lunch was at this little native restaurant—conch fritters that left my fingers oily, in a good way—and I tried switching seats just for the breeze coming through the window. Back in town later, Port Lucaya market was noisy with music and vendors calling out “Hey pretty lady!” which made me laugh even though I knew they say it to everyone.

I still think about that moment in the cave when nobody spoke for a minute—just listening to water move underground. If you want a day trip from Freeport or Port Lucaya that doesn’t feel rushed or fake, this one’s probably it.
