Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Gobustan and Mud Volcanoes
- Visit Qobustan National Museum
- See Gobustan petroglyphs
- Drive to mud volcanoes
- Ride Soviet Lada car safari
The experience
Qobustan sits 60 km outside Baku, and the tour starts at the national museum, where the guide walks you through the history of the first inhabitants of the region. The reserve holds more than 6,000 rock engravings carved into the stone over millennia: some dating back 40,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic, others from the Middle Ages. You see the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials scattered across the landscape, all evidence of intensive human occupation during the wet period after the last Ice Age.
After the museum and petroglyphs, the road to the mud volcanoes deteriorates enough that the tour switches vehicles. You trade the private car for a Soviet Lada (the kind built to handle rough terrain), and drive out to the mud volcanoes near Qobustan. Azerbaijan is home to roughly 400 of the world's 1,000 known mud volcanoes, and this section of the coast concentrates many of them. The Lada ride itself becomes part of the experience, a shift in pace and a different way to move through the landscape.
The whole tour runs about four hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. You'll want to dress for the weather and terrain. The tour operates in all conditions. Bottled water is provided, and entrance fees to the museums are covered in the price.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
How old are the rock carvings at Qobustan?
The petroglyphs at Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape range from 5,000 to 40,000 years old, with the oldest dating back to the Upper Paleolithic period. Over 6,000 engravings are preserved across the site, along with the remains of ancient caves, settlements and burials.
Why do we switch to a different car for the mud volcanoes?
The road to the mud volcanoes is rough and poorly maintained, so the tour switches from the private vehicle to a Soviet Lada, which is built to handle that kind of terrain. It's part of the adventure and the only practical way to reach the volcanoes.
What is included in the tour price?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, the English-speaking guide, entrance fees to Qobustan National Museum, transport by private vehicle to the site and the Lada for the mud volcano section, and bottled water are all included. You'll also receive a free fridge magnet.
Is Qobustan accessible if I use a wheelchair?
The site and museum are wheelchair accessible, and transportation options are wheelchair accessible as well. The rough terrain of the mud volcano section may present challenges depending on your mobility needs.
How far is Qobustan from Baku?
Qobustan is located about 60 km from Baku city center. The drive takes time, but hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange your own transport to the site.
