The experience

Four hours takes you through a city that splits between centuries. You start at Upland Park, the highest point in Baku, where the whole skyline spreads below you: the old walled core, the modern towers, the water beyond. From there the tour moves to Baku Boulevard, a seafront promenade that has run parallel to the Caspian since 1909, built up inch by inch on reclaimed shore when oil barons were raising mansions along the water. Walking it now, you see how the city layered itself.

The Heydar Aliyev Center is the architectural pivot. Designed by Zaha Hadid, the 57,500-square-meter complex abandons right angles entirely: the whole building flows in curves, a shape that looks like nothing else in the city. Inside and out, there is no place where two walls meet at ninety degrees. The guide walks you through what that means for how the space moves and how light falls.

The Old City closes the loop. Surrounded by defensive walls, it is the historical core of Baku and home to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower: both part of the UNESCO designation that came in 2000.
