Solve riddles through Sydney's oldest neighbourhood and walk under the Harbour Bridge

You receive a web link to a puzzle game, then solve riddles that guide you through The Rocks, Sydney's historic precinct. You'll walk under the Harbour Bridge, spot the Opera House from multiple angles, pass the Observatory, and explore hidden spots at your own pace — all without downloading an app or following a guide. The game works for 1–5 players and takes as long as you want it to.

1h–3h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Start near Circular Quay cruise terminal
  • Walk under Sydney Harbour Bridge
  • View western Sydney Harbour and swim area
  • See Sydney Opera House from various spots
  • Pass by Sydney Observatory with views
  • Solve riddles and explore The Rocks
  • Visit shops, cafes, pubs, and sights
  • Explore Barangaroo public parklands

The Experience

You're standing near Circular Quay, phone in hand, a few minutes from the cruise terminal. The game link arrives in your inbox. Open it on any mobile device — no app to download, just a web browser — and the first riddle appears. It's cryptic enough to make you look around, specific enough that you know where to go next. That's the whole thing: clue, solve, walk, repeat. The Rocks precinct unfolds around you as you move through it, and the riddles aren't just filler — they're tied to the actual history and hidden corners of this neighbourhood.

As you work through the puzzles, the Sydney Harbour Bridge shows up constantly. You'll walk right underneath it (locals call it "the coat hanger," and once you see it, you can't unsee it), and from different angles the Opera House keeps appearing in your sightline — not as a destination, but as a landmark that keeps reframing where you are. The Sydney Observatory features in one of the riddles, which means you'll pass by it as part of the route. You can stop whenever something catches your eye: a café, a shop, a historical plaque, the water at a public swimming area on the western side of the harbour. The game doesn't rush you. It just reveals the next clue when you're ready.

This self-guided walking tour won Transport for NSW's City Innovation Challenge in 2021, which tells you something about how it's designed — it's not a standard audio guide or a printed map. It's interactive, it keeps you engaged, and it works for one person or a small group up to five. You move at your own pace through The Rocks, past shops and restaurants and pubs, learning the neighbourhood's history as you go. Barangaroo's newer public parklands are part of the route too, so you're not just in the old colonial streets — you're seeing how the waterfront has changed.

The whole experience runs on your phone's internet connection. No download, no app store, no setup beyond clicking the link they send you. If you've got a moderate level of fitness for walking and a device that connects to data, you're set. Public transport is nearby if you need it, and you can pause or restart the game whenever you want. Book it before you arrive in Sydney, and you'll have something to do the moment you step off the ship or out of your hotel.
