The experience

The tour starts at Customs House, where you'll see a scale model of the whole walking route and learn Aboriginal names for parts of Sydney before heading out. From there you walk roughly 4 kilometres through the city's oldest neighbourhoods, stopping to hear about the "Rum Hospital" (now split between NSW Parliament, Sydney Hospital and the Mint), and pausing outside Hyde Park Barracks to learn about its construction and the architect behind it. You'll briefly enter the Royal Botanic Gardens to see where the Garden Palace once stood, and cut through the Queen Victoria Building (mainly for the bathrooms and the building itself). The guide covers perspectives from Aboriginal leaders, British governors, convicts and entrepreneurs, so the story of Sydney unfolds as the landmarks do.

Partway through, you stop in Hyde Park for a view of St Mary's Cathedral from about 50 metres away, then move to Martin Place to hear about the General Post Office and the ANZAC Cenotaph. The walk finishes in The Rocks, the neighbourhood closest to the water, where you pass through Nurses Walk and lower George Street before reaching Campbell's Cove. From there you see both the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge (you don't climb the bridge or enter the Opera House, but the guide explains how both were built). The group stays under twelve people, so you're not straining to hear or crowding the footpath.

At the end, you head to a brewery with views back across the harbour to the Bridge and Opera House, where you get a small glass of craft beer, a soft drink or juice, and a classic Aussie biscuit.
