The day starts with a pickup from your Perth CBD hotel and a drive north to Lancelin Sand Dunes, where you can try sandboarding on the pure white dunes and take photos. A bakery stop along the way offers a chance to use facilities or grab food if you're hungry. From there, the guide takes you to either Nilgen Nature Reserve or Hangover Bay (whichever suits the day's weather and group), where you'll see wildflowers in season and learn about the plants Aboriginal people used for fishing nets, food and medicine.
By late afternoon you arrive at the Pinnacles Desert itself. The landscape is a field of limestone pillars rising from golden sand, and you watch the sunset from within it. Dinner is a traditional Australian BBQ with fresh salads, bread rolls, Australian wines and bubbles, followed by tea, coffee, hot chocolate and dessert. As darkness falls, the guide sets up telescopes and astro binoculars so you can see planets, star clusters and nebulas in detail. You'll hear the Dreamtime stories the Aboriginal astronomers created for the night sky: the world's first stargazers interpreting the same stars you're looking at now. You can take photos of the sky with your smartphone through the telescope.
Weather permitting, the tour includes a final stop at Lancelin Beach alongside the fisherman's jetty, where you walk along the Indian Ocean shore before the drive back to Perth. The entire tour is in an air-conditioned vehicle with live commentary from your local guide. Children from age 2 are welcome. Those under 7 need their own car seats and restraints, which are provided.
