Hop off your car and into a 4WD for a wild ride across Lancelin’s vast white sands
A 45-minute 4WD adventure through Lancelin Sand Dunes, located 1.5 hours north of Perth, where you ride in an air-conditioned truck, stop to photograph the landscape, and sandboard down the giant dunes. Children from age 4 are welcome; departures run throughout the day so you can pick the time that fits your schedule.
Step-by-step itinerary
4WD and sandboarding adventure

- Park at Beacon Road car park
- Climb aboard 4WD truck
- Enjoy 45-minute 4WD dune tour
- Stop to admire views and take photos
- Sandboard down the dunes
The Experience
The truck leaves the car park off Beacon Road and climbs into the dunes immediately. You spend 45 minutes in an air-conditioned 4WD — the only vehicle operator running these slopes — with a guide who points out the views and stops where the light and the angle make sense for photos. The dunes themselves are the whole point: white sand, no vegetation, nothing between you and the scale of the place.
Sandboarding happens on the way down. You get a board, climb a slope, and ride it back to the truck. The guide shows you how; the dunes do the rest. It is not a lesson or a timed run — you go when you are ready, and the truck waits. Some people ride once, some ride multiple times during the 45 minutes. The adrenaline part is real; the fitness part matters, so moderate physical condition is the baseline.
Departures run at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, so you can book the slot that works with the rest of your day. The drive from Perth takes about 1.5 hours, and you self-drive to the car park — no pickup included. Bring sunscreen and water; the dunes reflect heat and there is no shade once you are out there.

How far is Lancelin from Perth and how do I get there?
Lancelin Sand Dunes sit 1.5 hours north of Perth. You self-drive to the car park off Beacon Road, where the 4WD departs — no hotel pickup is included, so you arrange your own transport to the meeting point.
Can my young children come on the 4WD and sandboarding tour?
Children are welcome from age 4 onwards. Infants aged 0–3 are not permitted for safety reasons, and the same restriction applies to pregnant travelers and anyone with back or spinal injuries.
What exactly happens during the 45 minutes?
You board the 4WD truck and ride through the dunes for the full 45 minutes, stopping to take photos and admire the views. During the ride, you get chances to sandboard down the slopes as many times as you want — the guide shows you how, and the truck waits while you ride.
What time options are available and can I choose my departure?
The 4WD & Sandboarding Tour departs at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm daily. You select your preferred time when you book, so you can plan around the rest of your itinerary.
What is included in the tour price?
The tour includes the 45-minute 4WD ride, sandboard use, driver's commentary, and an air-conditioned vehicle. You do not need to bring your own equipment or arrange the dune transport — everything is provided.
Do I need to be fit to sandboard, or is this suitable for beginners?
Moderate physical fitness is recommended because sandboarding and the dune environment require some stamina. The guide will show you how to sandboard; no prior experience is needed, but you should be comfortable with physical activity and heat exposure.
