The experience
The tour leaves from your accommodation with hotel pickup included. You drive north through Perth's leafy suburbs and along the coast, passing Scarborough, Trigg and Sorrento beaches as the landscape shifts from urban to farmland and native bushland. The Indian Ocean comes into view with its turquoise water, and the scenery changes noticeably as you head toward Lancelin. The drive itself is relaxed and takes in the natural landscape without rushing.
At Lancelin, you stop at the brilliant white sand dunes. A short dirt-track drive gets you right next to them. You can walk, climb and photograph the dunes. Sand boards are provided and included if you want to try sand boarding. From there, the tour moves to Cervantes, a small fishing town where you can eat lunch at the waterfront Lobster Shack restaurant (at your own expense), which is known for fresh local lobster, though other menu options are available. The stop is built into the day but the meal choice and cost are yours.
The Pinnacles Desert itself is thousands of limestone formations, some up to 4 metres high, scattered across yellow rippled sand in a pattern that looks otherworldly. Entry to Nambung National Park is included. You visit the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre to learn about the geology, fauna, flora and cultural heritage of the area, then drive the 4 km dirt track through the desert, stopping to walk among the pillars and take photos. The whole experience is private: your guide adjusts the stops and timing to match your pace and interests, and you can message ahead with any special requests.
Is this one for you?At 9 hours round-trip from Perth, this tour fills most of a day but leaves room for an early breakfast or a late dinner elsewhere. Because it's private, your guide adjusts the stops and pace to match your interests. You're not locked into a fixed schedule or a group's rhythm, so you can spend extra time at the Pinnacles if the landscape holds you, or move through Lancelin faster if you prefer.
